The Things Great Managers Do Differently
It is often said that exceptional people don’t do various things, they only do things differently. Irrespective of whether you’re a company professional or business personnel, you have to manage people efficiently. Different people use different techniques but if you observe great Managers, they have some commonalities amongst themselves.
1- SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS
To be a great manager, you have to set clear-cut expectations for your team. People working under you need to know what you expect from them over a particular timeframe. If this is not clearly defined and set in both ways, there’ll be plenty of confusion when the deadline comes and you’ll find unhappy faces and blame games everywhere the place. So it’s vital to discuss very well with the entire team and clarify wherever needed.
2- CREATING A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT
Another key issue that’s effectively handled by a good manager, should always see to create a positive environment for their subordinates. There are many organizations where employees just cannot perform at their best just because of corporate politics, unhealthy debates, and practices of negative criticism. Great managers always keep focusing on transparency and encourage team members to do the same.
3- ALWAYS SEEK WHAT IS UNIQUE
Every individual is different. You can not use the same tactics for everybody. Things don’t work this way! Great Managers try and learn what’s unique about every employee working under him/her and maximize that. Everyone is good at something or has some uniqueness. That uniqueness has to be identified, so it becomes easier to match the capabilities and improve productivity.
4- LEVERAGING AN EMPLOYEE’S STRENGTHS
If we analyse our skills, we will certainly realize that for a few specific skills, we are quite strong while for a few other skills, we’ve got some weaknesses. Now, you becoming a Manager and you’re trying to enhance the skill level of your team members, what would you do? Will you try to improve a person’s weak areas or strengthen his/her strong ones? Leveraging an employee’s strengths can reap far better outcomes than attempting to raise their weak spots and great managers do this exactly. If someone is pretty weak in an area, it already means he/she has a lesser interest therein. Therefore, productivity-wise, it doesn’t make a big difference. On the other hand, if we will emphasize the strong areas and check them out to strengthen them further, it can motivate the employees to achieve more, which leads to higher productivity and better output.
5- PRAISE AND RECOGNIZE EXCELLENCE
Some managers are quite reluctant to appreciate their subordinates because they think it will make them complacent. This is the completely wrong way of managing people! We are a human beings and by nature, we like to get appreciated for the things we do. If someone does a good job, we must praise and recognize excellence immediately. Great Managers never make it too late to appreciate.
6- DON’T MAKE ANY EMOTIONAL DECISION
In our personal lives, we make plenty of emotional decisions and follow our hearts rather than our head. However, for a business, there’s no room for such varieties of decisions. However, as citizenry, we can’t embark of that shell often. Great managers never make any emotional decisions; they keep their emotions out of their way and use their logic instead. you may must fire someone or close up a unit at some point in time – these are truly critical decisions to create. If you become emotional, it’ll hinder you from making the correct decisions and this one decision could be ok to sink you inside.
7- SHOWING PEOPLE YOU CARE
Last but not least is showing people you care about them. If you are a manager, you need to take care of the people you’re managing. They might need some extra leave here and there, they might need your inspired words when they are morally down, they might need to get boosted when things are not going on well, and so on. If they find you taking care of their needs and their expectations, they will also take care of you in return.
With over ten years of managerial experience at the corporate level, I’m still trying to master these soft skills and share my experience through different workshops. It’s not so difficult, you just need to be conscious and be open to learning. Others can be good but you have the potential to be great. Check how many of these seven you follow and note down the ones you’re still not. I’m sure you can improve and be a great managers eventually.
